Lifeworks joins autobiography, ethnography and life history. Rather than asking the subject to sit for a portrait, works emerge from talking about an event, looking at old photos, or exploring emotions. Exchanges between artist and subject can suggest the color of a painting or the dimensions and media in an installation.
Matrice developed through a collaboration with Juliann Allison. It focuses on the emotional, physical and intellectual changes brought about by maternity. For ethnography I usually initiate exchanges with the people I write about. In Lifeworks it's the other way around. In our article "Making Matrice" (below) Juliann and I examine this process.
