ON THE LINE
This project emerged from my 2013 solo exhibition “ in which I focused on clotheslines to probe social, cultural and aesthetic lines of all kinds. Beginning with my show in the gallery, the project created an expanding circle of artists, and scholars who developed methods for associating increasingly broad, diverse publics with the project. As we moved from a university gallery to a gallery in a mall, from mini exhibitions in public libraries to a series of outdoor pop-up exhibitions, we developed work that both included public participation and storytelling in the process of art making in various ways. Some of these can be viewed here.
Ninety visual artists, anthropologists, architects, musicians, dancers, poets and spoken word performers from the US, Latin America and Europe participated. Films, images and further information about this project supported by the National Endowments for the Arts our work can be viewed at http://ontheline.ucr.edu/
